## Key takeaways

- Five decisions pick your robot: **pool type and size, surfaces to clean, corded vs cordless, debris and filtration, budget and warranty**.
- Size cordless robots to about **1.5× your floor area**; for corded, make sure the rated pool length exceeds yours.
- Surface debris needs a **skimmer** or a robot that skims; floor robots don't touch it.
- Newer robots have short review histories: **a 2–3 year warranty** is a useful safety net.

Pool robots are easy to buy and surprisingly easy to buy wrong. The most common mistakes are choosing a robot rated for the wrong pool type or size, missing that you need waterline or surface cleaning, and treating cordless and corded robots as interchangeable. Work through these five decisions in order and the list narrows quickly. If you’d rather skip to a recommendation, our [best robotic pool cleaners of 2026](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/posts/best-robotic-pool-cleaners-2026/) ranks them by use case, or run your pool through the [robot matcher](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/tools/robot-matcher/).

## 1. Pool type, size and shape

Start with the basics: in-ground or above-ground, and how big. Multiply length by width to get your floor area; a 16×32 ft pool has about 512 sq ft, a 20×40 about 800. Deep pools add wall area, so size up for deep ends. If you don’t know your numbers, use the [pool volume calculator](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/tools/pool-volume-calculator/).

Sizing ladder Starting points by pool floor area (length × width). Walls add area, so size up for deep pools and heavy debris.

         Under ~400 sq ft floor
         →
        Compact / budget robot
12×24 ft and smaller; above-ground pools

         ~400–800 sq ft
         →
        Any mainstream robot
A typical 16×32 to 20×40 ft rectangular pool

         ~800–1,200 sq ft
         →
        Rated ≥ 2,000 sq ft or 40 ft+
Large rectangles, lap pools, deep ends

         1,200+ sq ft or freeform
         →
        Mapping robot, big battery
Multi-level, kidney-shaped or very large pools

For your exact pool, use the [robot matcher](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/tools/robot-matcher/) or the [pool volume calculator](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/tools/pool-volume-calculator/).

Cordless robots list a rated floor area per charge; aim for at least 1.5 times your floor area, because those numbers are best-case (see [coverage ratings explained](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/posts/robotic-pool-cleaner-coverage-ratings-explained/)). Corded robots list the longest pool they’re rated for (33, 40 or 50 ft). Freeform and multi-level pools benefit from robots with mapping or platform cleaning, such as the [Sora 30](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/pool-robots/beatbot-sora-30/) or the [AquaSense 2 Ultra](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/pool-robots/beatbot-aquasense-2-ultra/).

## 2. Which surfaces do you need cleaned?

- **Floor only:** fine for small, flat above-ground pools (Aiper Seagull SE, Dolphin Nautilus AG).

- **Floor and walls:** the standard for in-ground pools. Corded Dolphin Nautilus CC and CC Plus do this.

- **Floor, walls and waterline:** needed if you get a scum line. Most newer cordless robots do this.

- **Surface:** skimming is a separate job; see [skimmer vs vacuum robot](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/posts/robotic-pool-skimmer-vs-vacuum-robot/).

## 3. Corded or cordless?

Three kinds of pool robot They solve different problems — and plenty of pools use two of them.

        Corded vacuum robot
Plugs into a poolside power supply and runs as long as you want. Strong, proven, no battery to degrade — but you manage a floating cord and lift 20+ lbs out of the water.

Dolphin Nautilus CC · CC Plus · CC Supreme · Nautilus AG

        Cordless vacuum robot
A rechargeable battery gives 1.5–5 hours per charge and no cord. Newer models climb walls, scrub the waterline and park themselves at the surface — but you recharge every use or two.

Beatbot · Aiper Scuba · Wybot · Seagull SE

        Solar skimmer
Floats on the surface, skimming leaves, pollen and bugs all day on sunlight. It does not vacuum the floor or climb walls, so it complements — rather than replaces — a vacuum robot.

Betta SE Plus · Aiper EcoSurfer S2

Corded robots run as long as they’re plugged in, with strong suction and proven records, but you manage a cable and a power supply. Cordless robots have no cord and newer features but need charging and depend on a lithium battery. Our [corded vs cordless explainer](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/posts/corded-vs-cordless-robotic-pool-cleaners/) covers the trade-offs in depth.

## 4. Debris and filtration

If your pool collects leaves, favor a large basket (the Sora 30 has 5 L) and consider a skimmer. If your problem is fine dust, pollen or cloudy water, look for finer filtration such as a 3-micron insert (Aiper Scuba S1 and S3); see [filtration microns explained](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/posts/robotic-pool-cleaner-filtration-microns-explained/). Fine filters clog faster and need more frequent rinsing.

## 5. Budget, warranty and track record

| Budget | What you get |
| --- | --- |
| ~$150 | Floor-only cordless for small above-ground pools |
| ~$400–500 | Cordless with walls and waterline (Sora 10, Scuba S1, Wybot C1) |
| ~$600–850 | Mainstream cordless and corded robots (AquaSense 2, Scuba S3, Nautilus CC Plus) |
| ~$1,000+ | Platform cleaning, AI vision, bigger batteries |
| ~$2,500+ | Four-surface flagship with AI mapping (AquaSense 2 Ultra) |

Newer robots have short review histories, so check the warranty: Beatbot lists 2–3 years, Aiper and Wybot 2 years on most models and Dolphin Nautilus models typically 1 year. Then see whether a robot pays back against pool service with the [cost calculator](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/tools/cost-calculator/).

## Putting it together

For a typical rectangular in-ground pool with some debris: a cordless robot with walls and waterline in the $450–$850 range, such as the [AquaSense 2](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/pool-robots/beatbot-aquasense-2/). ## Frequently asked questions

### What should I look for when buying a robotic pool cleaner?
Match the robot to your pool type (in-ground or above-ground) and size, decide whether you need wall and waterline cleaning, choose corded or cordless, check filtration for your debris, then compare warranty and review history within your budget.

### How do I know what size robotic pool cleaner I need?
Multiply your pool's length by its width to get floor area, then choose a cordless robot rated for at least 1.5 times that area, or a corded robot rated for a pool longer than yours. Our robot matcher does this automatically.

### Do robotic pool cleaners work on all pool types?
Most are designed for in-ground and above-ground pools with vinyl, fiberglass, plaster or tile surfaces. Check the listing for your pool type, and confirm with the manufacturer for soft-sided or inflatable pools.

### Is a more expensive robotic pool cleaner always better?
No. Premium robots add AI mapping, surface skimming and bigger batteries that large, complex or leafy pools benefit from. A standard rectangular pool is well served by a robot in the $450–$850 range.
