## Key takeaways

- Cordless robots list a **rated floor area per charge** (like 3,229 sq ft); corded ones list the **longest pool** they're rated for (like 33, 40 or 50 ft).
- These are **best-case, floor-only** figures. Wall climbing, dirty pools and filter loading reduce real-world reach.
- Across the rated models we track, ratings imply about **600–800 sq ft of floor per hour** of runtime.
- Rule of thumb: pick a cordless robot rated for **at least 1.5× your floor area**; a typical 16×32 ft pool is about 512 sq ft.

Open a pool robot listing and you’ll see numbers like “up to 3,229 sq ft,” “300 minutes of runtime” or “pools up to 40 feet.” They’re useful, but they aren’t promises. Here’s how to read them.

## Two kinds of rating

Cordless robots list a rated floor area per charge. The [Beatbot Sora 10](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/pool-robots/beatbot-sora-10/) says about 3,229 sq ft; the [Wybot C1](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/pool-robots/wybot-c1/) about 1,618 sq ft; the [Wybot C2 Vision](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/pool-robots/wybot-c2-vision/) about 2,150 sq ft; the [AquaSense 2](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/pool-robots/beatbot-aquasense-2/) about 3,230 sq ft. Some listings, such as the [Scuba S3](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/pool-robots/aiper-scuba-s3/), give no coverage figure at all.

Corded robots list the longest pool they’re rated for: the [Nautilus CC](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/pool-robots/dolphin-nautilus-cc/) 33 ft, the [CC Plus](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/pool-robots/dolphin-nautilus-cc-plus/) 40 ft and the [CC Supreme](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/pool-robots/dolphin-nautilus-cc-supreme/) 50 ft. Because they don’t run on a battery, there’s no per-charge limit.

## What’s behind the cordless numbers

If you divide rated coverage by rated runtime for the models that publish both, you get a fairly consistent figure: roughly 600–800 sq ft of floor per hour. The Sora 10 is 3,229 sq ft over 5 hours (about 650 per hour), the Wybot C1 about 1,618 sq ft over roughly 2.7 hours (about 600), the AquaSense 2 about 3,230 over 4 hours (about 800). That’s useful in two ways: coverage and runtime are tied together, and where a listing gives only runtime you can estimate a coverage figure. Our [robot matcher](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/tools/robot-matcher/) does exactly that, using the low end (600 sq ft per hour) so it doesn’t flatter robots.

## Why the numbers are best-case

- **Floor-only.** Ratings generally describe floor cleaning. Wall climbing uses more battery, and the waterline pass adds more.

- **Clean pool.** A first-of-season clean in a dirty pool can fill the basket in minutes and slow the robot.

- **Water conditions.** Cold water and heavy algae change grip and battery use.

- **Marketing.** The most generous interpretation tends to go on the box. An owner of the earlier AquaSense measured about 2.5 hours against a longer rated figure, and Beatbot’s own pages vary by model year.

## How much pool do you actually have?

A typical 16×32 ft rectangular pool has about 512 sq ft of floor. A 20×40 has 800. Add walls (perimeter times average depth), and a 16×32 pool with 5 ft average depth has roughly 480 sq ft of wall on top. So most residential pools are well under 1,000 sq ft of floor, and a robot rated for 3,000 sq ft has a lot of margin. The [pool volume calculator](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/tools/pool-volume-calculator/) gives you floor and wall area.

Sizing ladder Starting points by pool floor area (length × width). Walls add area, so size up for deep pools and heavy debris.

         Under ~400 sq ft floor
         →
        Compact / budget robot
12×24 ft and smaller; above-ground pools

         ~400–800 sq ft
         →
        Any mainstream robot
A typical 16×32 to 20×40 ft rectangular pool

         ~800–1,200 sq ft
         →
        Rated ≥ 2,000 sq ft or 40 ft+
Large rectangles, lap pools, deep ends

         1,200+ sq ft or freeform
         →
        Mapping robot, big battery
Multi-level, kidney-shaped or very large pools

For your exact pool, use the [robot matcher](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/tools/robot-matcher/) or the [pool volume calculator](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/tools/pool-volume-calculator/).

## The rule of thumb

- **Cordless:** rated for at least **1.5× your floor area**. Size up for deep pools, heavy debris or freeform shapes.

- **Corded:** rated for a pool **longer than yours**. A 16×32 pool is 32 ft long, right at the Nautilus CC’s limit, so the CC Plus gives margin.

- **Large or complex pools:** favor robots with bigger batteries and platform or mapping features, such as the [Sora 30](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/pool-robots/beatbot-sora-30/) or [AquaSense 2 Ultra](https://robotpoolcleanerguide.com/pool-robots/beatbot-aquasense-2-ultra/).

## Frequently asked questions

### What does the sq ft rating on a pool robot mean?
It's the manufacturer's rated floor area a cordless robot can clean on one charge under favorable conditions, usually floor-only. It isn't a guarantee for a pool with walls, steps and heavy debris.

### How do I size a robotic pool cleaner to my pool?
Multiply length by width for floor area. Choose a cordless robot rated for at least 1.5 times that, or a corded robot rated for a pool longer than yours. Size up for deep pools, heavy debris and complex shapes.

### Why is real-world runtime shorter than the box number?
Manufacturer runtimes are generally measured in floor-only mode. Wall climbing, waterline scrubbing, a clogged filter and cold water all increase battery use. One owner of the earlier AquaSense measured about 2.5 hours against a longer rated figure.

### What size pool is the Dolphin Nautilus CC rated for?
Up to 33 ft in length. The Nautilus CC Plus is listed for up to 40 ft and the CC Supreme for up to 50 ft.
